To be continued: The Australian Newspaper Fiction Database contains over 21,000 novels, novellas and short stories published in 19th and early 20th century Australian newspapers. But not all of the instalments for the stories in the database have been identified; and many tens of thousands of stories remain undiscovered in the newspaper pages.
If you find any instalments of fiction or fictional works in Trove that are not in the database, these can be added. Adding instalments will improve the completeness of current records of newspaper fiction – in To be continued and in Trove’s Journals, articles and data sets zone – while adding newly discovered publications will grow our knowledge of what fiction was published and available to read.
How do I add an instalment (parts or articles) to a story in the database?
Sometimes you will find that an instalment of a story is missing from the database. If you can find it in Trove, you can add it. Watch a video tutorial on adding instalments here or follow these steps:
- Make sure the instalment belongs to the title you are looking at in the database. As well as having the same “Publication Title” it should be published in the same newspaper in the same time period as the other instalments for that title
- Click on the “Publication Title” that you want to add the instalment to
- Click on the “Add Chapter” button at the top of the page
- Enter the Article ID number from Trove. (This is the number that comes immediately after “article/” in the url. So if the url is “http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/70465372” you would enter “70465372”)
- Click “Get data from Trove”
- If the article is already in the database you will not be able to add it again. (If this happens you might find the number you are trying to add in the “Article ID” column – maybe the chapter number or title has been entered incorrectly? If so see How do I edit the chapter number and/or title for an instalment?)
- If the article is not already in the database you will be taken to a page where you can add the chapter number and title.
- Click “Edit chapter details” and enter the chapter number and title listed in the newspaper. If there is no chapter number enter “None”; if there is no chapter title leave the field blank
- Congratulations! You have added to our knowledge of fiction in Australian newspapers
Hint for finding missing instalments: look at other newspaper issues on the same day or days of the week, and on the same page number or numbers, as the other instalments. Go to the database to add a new instalment.
Note: When the Trove URL includes two Article ID numbers, separated by a forward slash, enter the second one. (So if the url is “http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/70465372/73922936” you would enter “73922936”.)
What type of new titles can I add to the database?
This database is devoted to prose fiction – short stories, novellas and novels – in Australian newspapers digitised by Trove.
How do I add a new story I’ve discovered in Trove to the database?
Watch a video tutorial on adding new stories to the database here, or follow these steps:
1. Login to the database (see See: How do I register as a member of the research community?)
2. If you discover a story in Trove first check to see that it is not already included in the database.
- Use the title of the story to search the “Publication Title” field
- If the title you have found is not in the database, add it (see below)
- If the title you have found is already in the database check to see what newspaper it appeared in
- If the title you have found is in a different newspaper to the one in the database add it (see below)
- If the title you have found is in the same newspaper to the one in the database but at a different time – i.e. a number of years or decades before or after – add it (see below)
- Even if the story is already known about it is important for our knowledge of the history of Australian writing, reading and publishing that different versions are identified and recorded.
3. Once you have confirmed that the story you have found is not in the database:
- Click on the green “Create Title” button on the search homepage. (This will become visible once you have entered your login details)
- Enter or select from the dropdown menu the information to describe the story you have found. If you are unsure of what information to enter in what field hover your mouse over the “i” icon beside the field name to see a description. If the author name is not already in the database see: How do I enter a new author in the database?
- Once you have entered information into all the compulsory fields (marked with an asterisks) and into any non-compulsory fields that you choose, press on the green “Create” button at the bottom of the page
- You will now need to populate your record with instalments or chapters of the story in the digitised newspapers. See: How do I add an instalment (parts or articles) to a story in the database?
If you are unsure of what type of records to add see: What type of new titles can I add to the database?)
How do I add an author to the database?
You can only do this if you are adding a new title and the author is not already in the database (see: How do I add a new story I’ve discovered in Trove to the database?)
- At the bottom of the page where you add information about a new story click on the blue “If you can’t find the author name in the list add it here” link
- Enter or select the relevant information from the drop down menus. If you are unsure of what information to enter in what field hover your mouse over the “i” icon beside the field name to see a description
- Once you have entered information into all the compulsory fields (marked with an asterisks) and into any non-compulsory fields that you choose, press on the green “Create” button at the bottom of the page
- Go back to the page where you were creating a new title. You will now be able to enter this new author name
Go to the database to add a new a new author.
What do I do if the newspaper where the story is published is not in the database?
The newspapers digitised by Trove are added to the database on a regular basis. If the newspaper is not in the database contact Katherine Bode (see Project Contact) with the newspaper title and its Trove ID and it will be added for you.

That story is already in the database in another newspaper, why should I add it? (Or, that story is very well known and published in multiple book editions, why should I add it to the database?)
One of the aims of asking people to add fiction they discover in Trove’s digitised newspapers is so that we can identify previously unknown stories and authors, and thus expand our knowledge of the history of Australian literature and literature in Australia. However, even if the story is already in the database, it will help researchers a lot if you add any new versions you discover (i.e. the story as it appears in a different newspaper or even in the same newspaper, years or decades before or after the available version). Discovering when, where and how fiction was not only published but republished will enable us to better understand the production, circulation and reception of literature in Australia by indicating, for instance, what fiction had the greatest (or smallest) circulations or readerships, as well as how newspaper editors sourced the fiction they published.
